Friday - It’s my 100 Blocks Volume 11 blog tour day!

http://www.quiltmaker.com/blogs/quiltypleasures/

Hello everyone! I have been negligent about keeping up with my blog, but today I want to share a special giveaway and block with you. I have a block in the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 11. It has been a while since I submitted a block to them (I have ones in Volumes 4, 5, and 6). They are having a wonderful blog tour with many of the talented quilters in the magazine and I get to be one of them!

Most quilters know that I love working with curves so I wanted to design something different with a curve. Pat Sloan had sent me her new fabric collection called The Sweet Life. Working on Electric Quilt 7 I came up with this block. As you can see it is simply made up of rectangles, squares, triangles and a simple curve. After you take my work shop on curved piecing you will see how simple it is!

Now it doesn't look like much as a single block. But when you put four blocks together you get this:

This is what it will look like in a quilt.

Now, I am never satisfied with my first version of a block so I had to play with it a little more. I decided to add a simple triangle in the corner.

Here is what it looks like, rotating the blocks in a group of four.

If you combine the first and second blocks in a quilt you get this:

Now doesn't that look much more interesting!

The great thing about this blog is that I am giving away three prizes. I will pick two names to win a magazine. One that Quiltmaker will send you and one that I will send. I will pick a third name to win four fat quarters of Pat Sloan's, The Sweet Life batik collection. All you have to do is leave a comment on why you would like the magazine and if you think you would attempt to make my block at the end of this blog. What would you add to the block to create a secondary design?

To be in more drawings you should visit Quiltmaker's Quilty Pleasure Blog. You can go back to the beginning of the blog tour and check out the other blogs from the designers. If you are lucky enough to win a copy of the magazine, congratulations! If not you can purchase one here: Quiltmaker Quilt and Sew Shop.

Now to be in the drawing you have to leave a comment at the end of this blog. Tell me why you would like the magazine and if you think you would make my block. DON'T FORGET TO LEAVE AN EMAIL ADDRESS SO I CAN CONTACT YOU IF YOU WON. I can't tell you how many times I have drawn a name only to find out I can't contact them. So don't lose out. I do not share your email address with anyone.

Thanks for reading, good luck and as always: Do what you love and love what you do. Toby

Amazing how different the block looks when it is set together!

I have put your block on (in?) my bucket list.

Wow, what a pretty block! Nice design when put all together. I've never worked with curves but would love to try this one. nancynehez@gmail.com

I love the transformation of putting blocks together - This is a block that would make a great quilt of any size. hoekstram@att.net

Unknown said...

I love your block and your colors--I would snowball the upper righthand corner then when four blocks are placed together there should be a secondary design inside the arcs and other great spin on the block, another thing I may try is to put the block on point. Thanks for this oppertunity and congratulations on getting your block placed in the book.

Great possibilities with your block. I would love to try it.
The magazine is such a great source for brainstorming over new projects and I just love to flip through and dream about new possibilities, lol!

Great looking block! I would love to try making it.

I have some of the previous 100 blocks and like to look through them for ideas. I would make your block, my first thought was "what a great border" and I wouldn't change a thing.

Allison said...

I do love Quiltmakers 100 Blocks magazines. I always find something to try. I've sewn garments for years and that's how I learned to sew curves. So, yes, I'd like to try your block.

Marly said...

I've seen many beautiful blocks on this hop and this is one of them. I'd love to win the magazine to have all at my fingertips. I'm not confident with curved piecing, so it would be a challenge! I accept the challenge: I'll make a mini quilt with your block, if I win a copy, of course!

kt said...

Love the block with the triangles in the corners! I would make it just like you did!!!

Dody said...

Very cleaver design. Lovin it!

QuilterLaura said...

Love your block, so many possibilities! I think I would try adding a triangle to the corner (like a snowball). Then, when 4 blocks come together if 2 blocks had a larger triangle and 2 had a smaller triangle, you would get a spool when they intersect...cool!

Anonymous said...

I love your quilt using the 2 blocks and I can see myself trying to make it. I have every issue of this magazine as I love looking at all the great designs. Thanks for a chance to win.

Oh, yes, I'll be making your block, and multiples of it. I want it in a quilt. I loved the first layout, then scrolled down and saw the second and liked it even more. I'll probably be playing around with it to see if I can come up with a secondary block I like better, but it's hard to beat pinwheels.

Jocelyn said...

I love 100 Blocks magazine because it is such a great source of creativity. I love seeing how designers add their own personal touch. Your block is amazing! It's so different and would be a great way to use scraps. Thanks!

Your block is so creative and fun!! I love curves because they are interesting to work with and the pattern flows easily across the completed piece. Another possible idea that would feature the original curved design, would be to replace the pinwheel with an applique motif in the center.

Margaret said...

I love the block and I would love to try it. I wouldnt know what to add until I really put it together I have to see to learn. I love how it changed the pattern as you changed something really small.

CyndyK said...

I would really like to win a magazine because it offers so much inspiration. I love your block! I have not done much curved piecing but I will definitely try this ine. I don't know how I would place it or modify it to make a secondary design. I'd just have to play around with it. Thanks for sharing your talent with us! cknapp3626@sbcglobal.net

This is a stunning block. I love the look of it with the low volume print background fabrics and multiple colors. It's versatile and a challenge for a new quilter (me) but I have to do what I love. Hi Toby,

What a lovely block! I am certainly thinking of making a quilt with this block and maybe adding in the opposite corner the same three pieces you put at both ends of the curved piece, so that when putting four blocks together you will have a little star in the middle.
I would love to win, but there are a lot of contestants:-)!

Kind regards,
